Haskell Canyon Bike Park: What to Know About Santa Clarita’s Massive New Mountain Biking Destination

Santa Clarita is close to opening one of the most ambitious mountain biking projects in Southern California: the new Haskell Canyon Bike Park. While the bike park is not officially open (that will happen July 1st), riders can enjoy the park right now!

Built within the sprawling Haskell Canyon Open Space near Copper Hill Drive, the project is designed to transform hundreds of acres of rugged canyon terrain into a year-round riding destination for everyone from beginners to experienced downhill riders. Once complete, the park will feature more than 15 miles of trails, jump lines, pump tracks, downhill flow trails and skills areas — all free and open to the public.

For Santa Clarita, the project is more than just another recreation space. City officials see it as a major investment in outdoor recreation, tourism and the region’s growing cycling culture.

Why the Haskell Canyon Bike Park Was Created

The park is part of Santa Clarita’s larger effort to establish itself as a premier mountain biking destination in Southern California.

Mountain biking has exploded in popularity across California over the past decade, but many riders in Southern California have long complained about limited trail access, overcrowded routes and a lack of purpose-built riding areas. Santa Clarita saw an opportunity to change that.

The city already operates over 100 miles of bike paths and maintains thousands of acres of open space. Officials also previously opened the smaller Santa Clarita Bike Park, which proved extremely popular and helped demonstrate demand for a larger, more advanced facility.

According to city representatives and trail advocates, the new Haskell Canyon project was created to:

  • Provide dedicated mountain biking infrastructure
  • Offer safe, professionally designed riding terrain
  • Support riders of all skill levels
  • Expand outdoor recreation opportunities
  • Encourage tourism and economic activity
  • Create a gathering place for the local biking community

The project also reflects Santa Clarita’s broader investment in outdoor living and open-space recreation.

When the Project Started

Planning for the bike park reportedly began several years ago, with city officials describing the project as “three years in the making.”

Construction officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 1, 2025.

Originally, the city hoped to open the park by the end of 2025. However, construction delays and unauthorized use of the site during development pushed the opening into early 2026.

Where the Park Is Located

The Haskell Canyon Bike Park is located at:

21450 Copper Hill Drive
Santa Clarita, California

The site sits inside the larger Haskell Canyon Open Space area, roughly 35 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles.

The location gives riders access to rolling canyon terrain, elevation changes and panoramic mountain views that are difficult to find this close to Los Angeles.

What the Bike Park Will Include

The scale of the project is what makes it stand out.

The park spans approximately 720 acres and includes terrain specifically designed for multiple riding styles and skill levels.

Trail System

The 15+ miles of trail network is expected to include:

  • Cross-country trails
  • Climbing trails
  • Directional downhill trails
  • Multi-use trails
  • Technical riding sections
  • Beginner-friendly routes
  • Advanced downhill flow lines

Bike Park Features

The core riding area is planned to feature:

  • Slopestyle lines
  • Downhill jump trails
  • Dual slalom race courses
  • Beginner and advanced pump tracks
  • Berms and rollers
  • Skills learning zones
  • Progressive jump lines
  • Skills loops

The layout is intended to allow riders to progress gradually from beginner terrain into more technical features.

Amenities

The park is also expected to include:

  • Parking areas
  • Restrooms
  • Picnic tables
  • Shade structures
  • Event space
  • Viewing areas
  • Bike repair stations

City officials have emphasized that the space is intended to function as a community recreation hub, not just a trail system.

Cost and Development

The project carries a reported cost of approximately $7.4 million.

Trail design and construction support have involved professional trail-building groups and local mountain biking advocates. Professional rider Spencer Rathkamp, who grew up riding in Santa Clarita, has also been involved in discussions surrounding the park’s development and rider experience.

Hours, Access and Admission

The bike park is expected to operate year-round and admission will be free.

As of now, official daily operating hours have not yet been fully published by the city. Riders should expect additional information closer to the official opening date. However, current signage says the gates close at 8:30pm.

What Makes the Park Different

Southern California has no shortage of trails, but purpose-built mountain bike parks of this scale are relatively rare — especially near Los Angeles.

What makes Haskell Canyon notable is the combination of:

  • Large-scale open-space terrain
  • Professionally designed bike infrastructure
  • Free public access
  • Multiple skill-level options
  • Dedicated downhill riding
  • Proximity to Los Angeles

For local riders, it could become one of the region’s most accessible mountain biking destinations without requiring a long drive into remote mountain areas.

Expected Opening

When it officially opens, Santa Clarita will likely become one of the most prominent mountain biking hubs in the region — and Haskell Canyon Bike Park could quickly become a go-to destination for riders across Southern California.
